American industrial technology company MKS has begun expanding its manufacturing operations in southern China, committing $25 million to increase production capacity as demand for advanced electronics equipment grows across Asia.

The Massachusetts-based company announced on Monday that construction work was progressing at its Atotech equipment manufacturing facility in Guangzhou. The expansion, originally launched in June, will increase the site's area from 20,000 to 50,000 square metres and introduce approximately 30 additional machining and fabrication systems. Completion is expected during the third quarter of 2027.

MKS also plans to create more than 300 employment opportunities while strengthening its engineering, installation and project delivery capabilities. The facility manufactures equipment used in processes such as surface treatment and electronics production, supplying businesses serving semiconductor, printed circuit board and other advanced manufacturing markets. Demand from customers in China and Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Vietnam, has supported the decision to expand. The company intends to improve collaboration between its Chinese operations and engineering teams elsewhere in its international network.

The investment demonstrates how foreign manufacturers continue to deepen their presence in China despite wider geopolitical tensions affecting technology supply chains. For MKS, additional local capacity could reduce delivery times and improve its ability to respond to regional customers. China also stands to benefit from manufacturing employment and technical expertise associated with the project. Its longer-term commercial value will depend on sustained electronics investment across Asia and the company's ability to maintain reliable production as international market conditions evolve.
