British financial technology company Revolut has secured registration as a bank in New Zealand, supporting plans to invest NZ$120 million over five years as it challenges the country's established banking providers.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand approved Revolut Bank New Zealand on 3 November, making it the country's 27th registered bank. The company, which entered the market as a financial services provider in 2023, has begun introducing deposit products following the approval. Its initial offering includes instant-access savings accounts with a promotional variable interest rate of 3.5% for eligible new customers.

Revolut intends to direct its investment towards product development, local recruitment and business expansion. The operation is led by Ryan Brosnahan, a former ANZ executive appointed earlier this year. Eligible deposits are covered by New Zealand's Depositor Compensation Scheme, bringing the bank within the country's established framework for protecting depositors. Revolut operates internationally and says it serves more than 80 million customers, making its expansion part of a wider effort to develop a network of locally regulated banking businesses.

New Zealand's banking market remains dominated by large Australian-owned institutions, giving digital challengers an opportunity to compete on pricing, convenience and customer experience. However, attracting deposits does not automatically establish a profitable banking operation. Revolut must demonstrate that its technology, risk controls and customer support meet local expectations as its business expands. The investment commitment represents planned expenditure rather than capital already deployed, with its eventual impact depending on product adoption and sustained competition.
